Bank Stocks Fall on Mixed Q1 Results
Today, several major Indian bank stocks like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and YES Bank fell because their first quarter (Q1) financial results were not as good as expected.
The Nifty Bank index, which tracks the performance of bank stocks, also went down.
Axis Bank and HDFC Bank saw their stock prices drop by more than 5% and 4.84% respectively.
Kotak Mahindra Bank also fell, but ICICI Bank bucked the trend and saw a small increase.
Analysts have different opinions on these banks.
Some think HDFC Bank and Axis Bank could go up in value, while others are more cautious, especially about YES Bank.
The main issue is that the profits these banks make from the difference between what they earn on loans and what they pay for deposits (called net interest margins) were not as high as hoped.
Some banks, like ICICI Bank, did better than others, but overall, the news was not great for most banks.
Nifty Bank index fell 1.48% to 57,668.35 due to mixed Q1 results from private lenders.
Axis Bank dropped 5.43% to Rs 1,256.40 despite healthy balance-sheet growth, offset by margin pressure.
HDFC Bank fell 4.84% to Rs 779.90, with analysts suggesting potential upside of up to 25.6%.
Kotak Mahindra Bank quoted 2.4% lower at Rs 380.60, with mixed views on its performance.
YES Bank shares fell 1.95% to Rs 23.15, with analysts maintaining a 'reduce' rating due to weak profitability.
