Bengaluru Civic Elections Face Uncertainty as SIR Flags Millions

Bengaluru Civic Elections Face Uncertainty as SIR Flags Millions

Bengaluru is checking its voter lists through a process called a Special Intensive Revision.

Officials have identified more than 47 lakh voters as possibly absent, shifted, duplicated, deceased or otherwise needing review.

These voters may not appear on the final list unless their details are confirmed.

That could reduce the number of eligible voters from about 1.03 crore to around 55 lakh.

Bengaluru currently has five planned municipal corporations.

The Karnataka government is considering whether to keep five corporations or create only two or three.

Changing the corporations would require new boundaries and ward arrangements.

This could take several months.

The Supreme Court has ordered the elections to be completed by the end of December, so the schedule may become difficult to meet.
