International Branch Campuses Transform Indian Higher Education
Imagine you want to study at a famous university from another country, but it's very expensive and far away.
Now, some of these universities are opening campuses right here in India.
This means you can get the same degree without going abroad, and it will cost much less.
It's like having a piece of a foreign university in your own country.
This is great news for students who want a good education but can't afford to study overseas.
It also helps families save money and keeps students closer to home.
The Indian government is making it easier for these foreign universities to set up campuses here, which will give more students the chance to get a global degree without leaving India.
International Branch Campuses (IBCs) in India offer global degrees at lower costs and with stronger local relevance.
Nearly 12.5 lakh Indian students pursued higher education overseas in 2025, with families spending $2.92 billion on education in FY25.
IBCs estimate a 30-40% reduction in tuition costs and a 40-50% total cost reduction, potentially saving families Rs 20-25 lakh annually.
As of December 2025, 13 universities under UGC regulations and 5 under GIFT City regulations are preparing to offer programs, with most commencing in August or September 2026.
The establishment of IBCs is projected to serve over 560,000 students, save $113 billion in foreign exchange outflow, and generate demand for 19 million sq-ft of real estate over the next 15 years.
