Assam Congress flags CAG report on financial irregularities
The Assam Congress has criticized the state government for financial mismanagement, citing a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
The report shows that the government saved a lot of money but didn't spend it properly.
Nearly 50 departments didn't show where they spent Rs 18,669.55 crore.
The Congress says this is like stealing and that the government is borrowing too much money for the wrong things.
The CAG also warned that the state's debt will keep growing, which might lead to higher taxes or less spending on important things in the future.
Assam Congress accuses the BJP government of financial irregularities and misappropriation of public funds based on the CAG report.
The CAG report reveals discrepancies in expenditure, borrowing, and accounting across multiple departments.
Nearly 50 departments failed to submit utilization certificates for Rs 18,669.55 crore in funds allocated up to 2022–23.
The CAG warns of the state's rising debt trajectory, projecting total liabilities to reach Rs 1.74 lakh crore by March 2026.
The Congress alleges that 65% of recent borrowings were spent on beneficiary schemes, while only 25% went to developmental work.
