Court rejects UP plea to withdraw Akhlaq murder charges
A court in Uttar Pradesh rejected the state government's request to drop charges against people accused of killing a man named Mohammad Akhlaq in 2015.
The mob attacked Akhlaq because they believed he had killed a cow and stored its meat.
The court decided to speed up the trial and hear it every day.
The government wanted to drop the charges because they said there were problems with the evidence, but the court didn't agree.
Akhlaq's family says the accused should be punished.
The trial will continue, and the next hearing is on January 6, 2026.
A court in Surajpur rejected the UP government's plea to withdraw charges against the accused in the 2015 lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq.
The court directed the trial to be fast-tracked with daily hearings and all evidence to be protected.
Akhlaq was lynched by a mob over rumors of cow slaughter and storing its meat at his home in Dadri’s Bisada village.
The UP government sought to withdraw the case, citing inconsistent statements by Akhlaq’s kin and lack of evidence.
