US Exempts German Rosneft Unit Amid Energy Control Assurances
Imagine Germany has a big gas station company that's owned by a Russian company.
The U.S. put new rules, like a penalty, on Russian companies.
But Germany said, 'Wait, this gas station company is now run by us, not Russia, and we really need it to keep our country fueled!'
So, Germany got a special letter from the U.S. saying their gas station company is okay and won't get the penalty because Germany is in charge now.
This is important because the gas station company helps supply a lot of fuel to Germany and is a big employer in one of its regions.
The U.S. has granted written assurance exempting Germany's Rosneft unit from new energy sanctions.
Germany's Economy Minister confirmed the exemption, stating the assets are no longer under Russian control.
Germany had sought this clarity from the U.S. after new sanctions were announced.
Key assets include the PCK refinery in Schwedt, vital for Germany's fuel supply and a major employer.
The German government has had the refineries under state trusteeship since 2022.
