Centre Asks States to Act Against Unproven Stem Cell Therapies

The Union health ministry has told states to take action against unproven stem cell treatments.

These treatments are being offered for illnesses where they have not been shown to work.

Doctors who provide, prescribe, or advertise them without approval could be accused of professional misconduct.

The National Medical Commission issued a warning to doctors.

Doctors may face disciplinary action under medical ethics rules.

Clinics may also face penalties or lose their licences.

However, the clinical-establishments law applies only in 19 states and Union Territories that have adopted it.

The medical ethics rules apply across India.
