Natural formations part of India's climate defence against urban flooding

Natural formations part of India's climate defence against urban flooding

India is a big country with many big cities.

When it rains a lot, some cities can get flooded with water on the streets.

This is called surface flooding.

A group called the World Bank studied this problem in India.

They say more than two out of every three people who live in Indian cities could be at risk from flooding.

Floods can damage homes, roads, and businesses, which costs a lot of money.

The World Bank thinks floods could cost India $5 billion every year by 2030, and $30 billion every year by 2070.

They say cities should not only use concrete drains to carry water away.

Nature can help too, with parks, lakes, and soil that soak up extra rainwater like a sponge.

So natural places are not just pretty to look at, they can also protect cities from floods.
