Brazil's Supreme Court Faces Internal Conflict Over Judicial Investigations

Two judges on Brazil's highest court are publicly fighting with each other.

Justice André Mendonça shared a report that raised questions about Justice Alexandre de Moraes's contact with banker Daniel Vorcaro.

The report also mentioned a contract involving Vorcaro and a law firm connected to Moraes's wife.

Moraes asked the court to investigate Mendonça for allegedly misusing his authority.

The court must decide whether to investigate either judge, but no investigation has yet been approved.

Chief Justice Edson Fachin asked the attorney general to give an opinion within five days about the allegations against Mendonça.

The fight is happening shortly before Brazil's October 4 election.

People worry that whichever decision the court makes could affect its reputation and public trust.
