Sammakka Temple Features Ancient Koya Symbols
A new temple dedicated to Sammakka and Saralamma is being built in Mulugu.
The temple features many ancient symbols and designs that are important to the Koya community.
These include a unicorn, a special swastik symbol, and pictures of animals and gods.
The temple's design is based on research done by students from a Koya village.
They studied old palm-leaf manuscripts and oral traditions to understand the Koya community's history and culture.
The temple is scheduled to open in January 2026 and will have over 7000 ancient images and 90 panels on its compound wall.
The Sammakka-Saralamma Temple in Mulugu will feature ancient Koya symbols like the unicorn, Pashupati, and a unique right-to-left Swastik.
The temple's design is based on research conducted by students from a Koya village, drawing from palm-leaf manuscripts and oral traditions.
The temple will have 7000 ancient images and a compound wall with 90 panels depicting Koya clans, gotras, and sacred history.
The Koya community's history is deeply rooted in the history of undivided India, with evidence suggesting they once ruled 101 kingdoms.
The temple's construction posed a unique challenge as there were no existing models for Adivasi temples.
