India captain Gill eyes 3,000 WTC runs and 1,000-run feat
Shubman Gill is the captain of India's cricket team.
He will play two Test matches against Sri Lanka starting on 15 August.
If he scores 157 runs, he will become the first Indian batter to reach 3,000 runs in the World Test Championship.
He is also only 50 runs away from becoming the first Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.
Gill has 2,843 runs in the WTC, the most of any Indian batter.
England's Joe Root has the most WTC runs of all, with 6,651.
Gill recently hurt a finger on his right hand, which worried fans.
But he batted in a practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI and scored 44 runs, showing he is fit.
The series is important because India are fifth in the championship standings.
The matches will be played in Galle, Sri Lanka.
Shubman Gill needs 157 runs in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka to become the first Indian batter to reach 3,000 World Test Championship runs.
The series begins on 15 August in Galle and forms part of the 2025-27 WTC cycle, with India fifth in the standings at 48.15 PCT.
Gill needs 50 runs to become the first Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle; he currently has 950 from 14 innings at an average of 79.16.
Gill leads India's WTC run charts with 2,843 runs, while England captain Joe Root is the overall WTC leader with 6,651 runs.
Despite a right-hand finger injury, Gill eased fitness concerns by scoring 44 runs off 54 balls in a practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI.
