NGT halts tree felling in Ludhiana
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stopped the cutting of trees in Ludhiana, Punjab.
The trees were supposed to be cut to make a canal stronger by covering it with concrete.
Some people who care about the environment asked the NGT to stop this because they think there are other ways to make the canal stronger without cutting so many trees.
The NGT agreed and said to stop cutting the trees until they decide what to do next.
They want to make sure that the best way to protect the environment is chosen.
NGT stayed further felling of 391 trees in Ludhiana with immediate effect.
Approval for land use change and tree felling was granted by the Regional Officer, Chandigarh.
Petitioners argued that viable alternate methods of concreting were not examined.
NGT intervention aims to prevent potential environmental damage.
Next hearing will decide the future course of action regarding the tree felling.
