MSCI Rebalance Drives Record NSE Closing Auction Turnover
The National Stock Exchange has a special 15-minute auction at the end of the trading day.
On August 31, many large investors used it to adjust their investments after an MSCI index review.
This made the auction far busier than usual.
Shares worth ₹39,718 crore were traded during the session.
About 678.11 million shares changed hands, and more than 98,000 investors took part.
Sixty of the 210 traded stocks reached the auction’s 3% price limits.
The Bank Nifty moved from a loss before the auction to a gain after it.
Experts said the auction may help investors trade more smoothly, but some stocks could remain jumpy until more regular trading develops.
NSE’s Closing Auction Session recorded a record ₹39,718 crore turnover on August 31, equal to 22% of its total cash-market turnover.
The 15-minute auction processed 678.11 million shares as institutional investors executed trades linked to the MSCI August 2026 Index Review.
More than 98,000 investors participated, while NSE held a 99.9% share of the Closing Auction Session.
Of 210 traded stocks, 60 reached the permitted 3% price limit: 47 hit the upper limit and 13 the lower limit.
NSE’s cash-market turnover rose 64.2% to ₹1.82 lakh crore, while the Nifty fell 0.39% and the Bank Nifty gained 0.92%.
