Karnataka Congress Demands MGNREGA Reimplementation
The Congress party in Karnataka is planning a special two-day assembly session to demand that the central government bring back the MGNREGA program.
The program was replaced by the VB-G RAM G Act, which the state government says will take away jobs worth ₹6,000 crore.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar challenged BJP leaders to an open debate on the merits of MGNREGA.
The Congress party is also planning protests and padayatras (marches) to raise awareness about the issue.
They believe it is unconstitutional to cancel a program that provides employment to the poor.
Meanwhile, the BJP has accused the Congress of running a malicious campaign against the VB-G RAM G Act, claiming that the act addresses the growing needs of the rural poor by offering more workdays and jobs.
The BJP also criticized the Congress government's claims on rice distribution, demanding that PM Modi's image be printed on all rice bags and receipts.
