Disney+ Focuses on Korea and Japan for APAC Streaming Strategy
Disney is making a big plan for its streaming service, Disney+, in Asia.
They are going to focus a lot on shows from South Korea and Japan.
This is because they've seen that shows from Korea do really well across Asia and they want to make more of them.
They are also looking to make more Japanese shows, including live-action and cartoons, and are interested in stories based on popular Japanese comics and games.
While they had some shows in other parts of Asia, they are now concentrating their efforts on Korea and Japan.
They also talked about sports, saying that their sports service, ESPN+, will only be available in Australia and New Zealand for now.
However, they might add sports to Disney+ in other countries later if it makes sense.
Disney also wants to work with local TV stations and services in different countries, not just be a separate app.
They are excited about making content that people in these countries will love, especially new types of shows that might appeal to more people.
Disney+ is sharpening its content strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, with a primary focus on South Korea and Japan.
The company plans to bolster investment in Korean content, expanding into genres like fantasy romance and unscripted shows, in addition to existing strong male-appealing series.
Significant investment will also be directed towards Japanese live-action programming, animation, and cross-medium adaptations, leveraging the country's rich storytelling heritage.
ESPN+ will not expand to other APAC territories beyond Australia and New Zealand, due to market fragmentation and specific rights, but opportunistic sports integrations are being considered globally.
Disney+ will collaborate with local free-to-air broadcasters and services in each market, viewing its platform as complementary rather than cannibalistic to existing offerings.
