IPC Seeks US Tariff Relief Amid Strong Pepper Demand
Pepper producers really want the United States to stop charging extra money, called tariffs, when they send pepper to America.
This is because people in the US really like to buy pepper!
The International Pepper Community (IPC) is talking with the US government and spice groups to try and get these tariffs removed.
Some countries already pay high tariffs, like India at 50%.
The IPC believes pepper should be let in without tariffs because it's like a natural resource that's hard to get.
They are also working on making pepper growing more sustainable and using technology to track where the pepper comes from.
Even though weather might make a little less pepper grow next year, there should still be enough for everyone, and prices might go up a bit.
The International Pepper Community (IPC) is seeking tariff exemptions from the US due to strong market demand for pepper.
The US is currently applying temporary tariff rates to major pepper-producing countries, ranging from 19% to 50%.
IPC's Executive Director, Marina Novira Anggraini, stated that black pepper is eligible for exemption under the 'unavailable natural resources' category.
Global pepper production for 2025 is estimated at 520,000 tonnes, with a projected increase to 533,000 tonnes in 2026, despite concerns about weather variability.
IPC is focusing on sustainable growth through climate-smart practices, resilient planting materials, and digital integration for market intelligence and traceability.
