ICG Marks Milestones with Keel Laying, Plate Cutting, and Girder Laying Ceremonies
The Indian Coast Guard is building new patrol boats and special hovercrafts to better protect the country's coastline.
Ceremonies were held to mark the start of building for these vessels.
The patrol boats are fast and will help with tasks like patrolling, rescuing people, and enforcing laws.
They will have special engines and can even be used in wartime.
The hovercrafts are also being built in India with local parts and can travel over water and marshes, helping the Coast Guard respond quickly to emergencies.
These new ships are part of India's effort to build more of its own defense equipment.
Keel laying ceremonies for the second Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) and plate cutting for the fifth FPV, under the 14 FPV Project for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), were held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).
Girder laying ceremonies for the second and third indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) for the ICG took place at Chowgule’s Rassaim Yard in Goa.
The contract for 14 FPVs, with a minimum of 60% indigenous content, was signed on January 24, 2024.
The FPVs are approximately 340-tonne vessels equipped with indigenous gearboxes, water-jet propulsion, AI-based predictive maintenance systems, and multipurpose drones, with a contractual speed exceeding 33 knots.
The contract for six ACVs, based on a UK design with over 50% indigenous content, was signed on October 24, 2024, and will enhance India’s coastal security infrastructure.
The FPV project contract is valued at Rs 1070.47 crore.
