CITU-Backed Union Challenges Hyundai Plant's Labor Recognition
Workers at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur plant are having a disagreement about their union.
One union, supported by CITU, says most workers are with them and wants to be part of talks about wages.
They're also worried about things like too much work and not enough time off.
Hyundai's management recognizes a different union and doesn't agree with the CITU-backed group.
The union wants either to be included in wage talks or for workers to secretly vote on which union they want.
Because of a court case, Hyundai can't say much right now.
Both sides disagree on who has the most workers.
The union claims the majority wants to negotiate for things like the workload, introduction of automation and Artificial Intelligence without reduction in working hours and forced overtime without negotiation.
CITU-backed union HMIEU issued a strike notice at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur plant.
HMIEU claims a majority of 1,457 out of 2,420 permanent employees, disputing the recognized union.
The union is demanding inclusion in wage negotiations or a secret ballot vote.
HMIL has not recognized HMIEU and states the matter is sub-judice due to ongoing litigation.
Dispute includes workload increases, automation concerns, and forced overtime.
