India Delays Satellite Services Over Security and Spectrum Issues
India is getting ready to start satellite internet services, but there are two big problems to solve first.
The government wants to make sure that all the data stays in India and that the companies can be monitored by security agencies.
They have given some companies temporary permission to test if they can meet these rules.
The other problem is about how much the companies should pay for using the airwaves (spectrum).
The government and the telecom regulator can't agree on the price, so they are still discussing it.
Until these issues are fixed, the services can't start fully.
The minister also talked about Vodafone Idea, a phone company that owes a lot of money to the government.
The government has turned some of that debt into ownership of the company.
If Vodafone Idea doesn't get help, it might have trouble paying back the rest of the money it owes.
The minister said India has four strong phone companies, which is good for keeping prices low.
India is delaying the rollout of satellite communication services due to unresolved security clearance and spectrum pricing issues.
Companies like Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb, and Reliance Jio must comply with stringent national security requirements, including data localization and lawful interception.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are in disagreement over spectrum pricing for satcom services.
Vodafone Idea (VIL) owes the government around Rs 2 lakh crore, with the government holding a 49% equity stake in the company.
The government is considering Vodafone Idea's request for relief but has not granted any fresh relief so far.
