Assam CM: Only Three Granted Citizenship Under CAA
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is a law to give Indian citizenship to people who came to India from certain countries before a certain date because they were being persecuted for their religion.
In Assam, the government has only given citizenship to three people so far under this law.
Many people were worried that the CAA would bring in a lot of new citizens, but the Chief Minister says this hasn't happened.
Only 12 people applied, and most applications are still being reviewed.
Assam CM says only three people have received citizenship under CAA.
A total of 12 applications for citizenship have been received in Assam.
Nine applications are currently under consideration.
The CM indicated that the initial fears of mass citizenship were unfounded.
The CAA aims to provide citizenship to specific religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
