Sediqullah Atal scripts history with highest ODI score on birthday
Cricket is a sport where players hit a ball with a bat and score runs.
Sediqullah Atal is a cricketer from Afghanistan.
He played a match for his team against Ireland in the city of Belfast.
The match happened on his 25th birthday.
Atal scored 143 runs, which is a very big score.
No one had ever scored that many runs in this kind of cricket match on their birthday before.
The old record was 140 runs, set by Tom Latham from New Zealand.
Atal also batted together with his teammate Ibrahim Zadran, and they added 231 runs for the second wicket.
Zadran scored 107 runs himself.
That partnership is the best Afghanistan has ever had for the second wicket in one-day internationals.
Sediqullah Atal scored 143 off 120 balls on his 25th birthday against Ireland in Belfast, setting a new record for the highest ODI score on a birthday.
The previous record belonged to Tom Latham, who scored 140 not out for New Zealand against the Netherlands on his 30th birthday in 2022.
Atal and opener Ibrahim Zadran shared a 231-run second-wicket partnership, Afghanistan's highest for that wicket in ODIs.
Zadran made 107 off 118 balls and became the joint-third-fastest batter in the world to reach 2,000 ODI runs.
Note: the article's stats table lists Ibrahim Zadran as the 143-run scorer, contradicting the article text, which credits Sediqullah Atal with the runs.
