Expert Outlines 5 Levels of Financial Health, From Survival to Freedom
Imagine your money journey is like climbing a ladder.
At the bottom, Level 1, you're just trying to get by, with money disappearing quickly and feeling worried.
To climb up, you start by noticing where your money goes and saving a little bit.
Level 2 is when things feel more stable, bills are paid, and you're starting to save more regularly.
Level 3 means you have a safety net, like an emergency fund, and you're getting rid of most of your debt.
Level 4 is when your money starts growing on its own through investments, and you're thinking about the long term.
The very top, Level 5, is Financial Freedom!
This is where your money works for you so you can choose what you want to do, and you feel happy and in control.
It takes effort, but learning about money helps you feel brave instead of scared.
Chartered Accountant Nitin Kaushik identified five levels of financial health: surviving, finding balance, building safety nets, creating wealth, and financial freedom.
Level 1 involves living paycheck to paycheck with no emergency fund and high debt, focusing on basic stability and expense tracking.
Advancing through the levels requires consistent debt reduction, building emergency funds (up to 3-6 months of expenses), and disciplined saving/investing.
Level 4 focuses on creating wealth by investing a significant portion of income, diversifying assets, and ensuring income growth outpaces lifestyle growth.
Financial freedom, Level 5, is achieved when passive income covers all expenses, allowing work to be a choice and focusing on purpose and philanthropy.
