Brazil opens reciprocity process against US over tariffs

Brazil opens reciprocity process against US over tariffs

The United States put extra taxes, called tariffs, on some things that Brazil sells to America.

Tariffs make those goods more expensive to buy.

The U.S. says Brazil was not playing fair in trade and did not do enough to stop forced labor.

Brazil thinks these taxes are unfair.

So Brazil's leader, President Lula, promised to fight back.

Brazil has a special law called the 'Reciprocity Law' that lets it respond.

That response could mean new taxes on American products.

Brazil might also limit American movies and TV shows or pause patents protecting American medicines and farm seeds.

Brazil is first asking to talk with U.S. trade officials.

The two countries are not getting along very well right now.
