TSPL’s Biofuel Model Cuts Punjab Farm Fires
A power plant in Punjab called TSPL has started a special program to turn leftover crop material, called stubble, into biofuel instead of burning it.
This has helped reduce the number of farm fires in the area by a lot.
In just two years, the number of fires went down by 87%.
The plant buys the stubble from farmers and turns it into fuel, which helps the environment and gives farmers a new way to make money.
This has also made the air cleaner in Punjab and nearby areas.
TSPL's biofuel model reduced stubble burning in Mansa, Punjab by 87% in two years.
The number of farm fires dropped from 2,253 in 2023 to 306 in 2025.
104 out of 244 villages in Mansa reported zero farm fires in 2025.
TSPL set up Punjab's largest torrefied bio-pellet manufacturing facility with a capacity of 500 tons per day.
The plant has co-fired over 2,50,330 MT of biomass, achieving 5.07% of its year-to-date target.
