Mumbai's BMC Headquarters Hoists Tricolour on 80th Independence Day

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15, the day the country became free from British rule in 1947.

In 2026, the country marked its 80th Independence Day.

In Mumbai, a special flag-hoisting ceremony took place at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation building, known as the BMC.

The Indian national flag, called the Tricolour, was raised at 7 o'clock in the morning.

The historic building was lit up in the flag's colours of saffron, white, and green.

Many people, including civic officials and staff, gathered early to watch the flag rise.

The BMC headquarters is a famous heritage landmark, and the area around it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Other celebrations also happened across Mumbai, including at Shivaji Park and the Gateway of India.

The day reminds people of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.

It is a time to celebrate freedom, unity, and national pride.
