Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 469 as Search Widens
A very large flood hit Nepal on Wednesday morning.
It pushed water, mud and rocks through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.
By Friday, officials said 469 people had died.
They were still looking for 977 people who had not been found.
Search teams expanded into several districts downstream from the original flood area.
More than 1,500 people were rescued in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, while an earlier report said 1,976 people had been rescued by helicopter.
Nepal sent money to three affected districts for emergency help.
Other countries and organizations also offered support, including assistance for foreign nationals caught in the disaster.
Nepal authorities reported 469 deaths by Friday, up from 389 bodies recovered on Thursday.
The number of missing people remained 977, with searches expanding downstream beyond Rasuwa.
Bodies were recovered across several districts, including 178 in Chitwan and 110 in Nawalparasi Bardaghat Purba.
Rescuers brought 644 people to safety in Rasuwa, 898 in Nuwakot and three in Dhading.
Nepal released NPR 25 million for relief, while India, the United States and the World Health Organization provided or offered assistance.
