Malaysian Minister Links LGBT Lifestyle to Stress
A minister in Malaysia said that work stress and other things might make people part of the LGBT community.
This made many people on social media laugh and criticize him.
Some people even joked about their own stress and sexuality.
The minister also said that the government doesn't have good data on how many LGBT people are in Malaysia.
He mentioned a study that listed work stress, social environment, sexual experiences, and lack of religious practice as possible reasons.
Some people were arrested for LGBT-related activities, but they weren't prosecuted because there wasn't enough evidence.
Instead, they were given counseling or sent to rehabilitation programs.
The government also has special courses to help people.
However, LGBTQ rights advocates say the minister's statement is wrong and should be corrected.
Malaysian Minister for Religious Affairs Zulkifli Hasan linked work stress, social pressure, sexual experience, and insufficient religious practice to the LGBT lifestyle.
The minister cited a 2017 study by Sulaiman et al to support his claims.
Between 2022 and 2025, 135 people were arrested for LGBT-related activities, but no prosecutions occurred due to lack of evidence.
The government offers counseling, rehabilitation programs, and special courses to guide participants in a 'positive direction'.
LGBTQ rights advocates criticized the minister's statement as misinformation and called for a retraction.
