Italy Pushes for Faster EU Levy on Low-Value E-commerce Parcels
Imagine lots of cheap toys and gadgets coming into Europe from other countries.
A special tax, like a small fee, is supposed to be put on these packages starting in 2028.
But Italy's minister thinks this tax should start sooner, in 2026.
He says Europe needs to be quick to make rules so that these cheap, unregulated items don't cause problems for European businesses and consumers.
It's like asking for a bouncer at a party to check IDs sooner rather than later to keep things orderly.
Italy's Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called for strong and fast EU rules against unregulated products.
He urged the EU to expedite the introduction of a levy on low-value e-commerce parcels from outside the bloc.
The proposed levy is now suggested to be implemented in 2026, two years earlier than the original plan of 2028.
The minister's push is aimed at addressing the influx of cheap and unregulated goods.
