Study Links White Matter Health to Cognitive Resilience

Study Links White Matter Health to Cognitive Resilience

Scientists studied the brains and thinking skills of 459 older adults in India.

The brain has gray matter that processes information and white matter that helps brain areas communicate.

The study found that both types of brain tissue are important for thinking well.

Gray matter loss was generally linked to poorer cognitive performance.

However, healthy superficial white matter seemed to reduce some of the effects of gray matter loss.

It was especially connected with better language skills.

This suggests that strong brain connections may help some people stay cognitively healthier.

Researchers said longer-term studies are needed to test this idea.
