Tamil Nadu to Phase Out Physical Driving Licences, RCs

Tamil Nadu to Phase Out Physical Driving Licences, RCs

Tamil Nadu is changing how driving licences and vehicle registration certificates are issued.

Starting September 13, 2026, the government will provide these documents digitally instead of mailing plastic smart cards.

People can download them after passing a driving test or registering a vehicle.

The digital documents will have QR codes that officials can scan.

The codes will connect to government records through mParivahan and DigiLocker.

People who want paper copies may print them themselves or pay an approved e-Seva centre to print them.

Officials will accept digital copies and readable paper printouts for checks.

Fines and other actions will also be recorded in government databases.
