BJP Challenges Rahul Gandhi’s Account in Dalit Controversy
A controversy began after people allegedly performed a purification ritual at a place where Mallikarjun Kharge had spoken.
Rahul Gandhi said this treated a Dalit leader as if he had made the place impure.
He called it a serious form of untouchability and a possible crime.
Kharge also raised the issue in Parliament.
The BJP said the incident was regrettable but denied that the party organised it.
BJP leaders said some participants were Dalits and that the event was only a cleaning programme.
Congress says the episode shows continuing discrimination against Dalits.
The BJP says Congress is presenting a misleading political story.
Both parties are arguing over the issue because Dalit voters are important in future elections.
The BJP cited Scheduled Caste eyewitnesses to challenge Rahul Gandhi’s account of an alleged purification ritual in Haldwani.
Gandhi called the alleged act untouchability and a violation of the Constitution and the SC/ST Act.
Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session.
BJP leaders denied organisational involvement and said the cleaning programme was unrelated to caste.
The dispute has become politically significant because Dalit votes could influence upcoming state elections.
