India Deepens Taliban Engagement While Recognition Remains On Hold

However, India has not officially recognized the Taliban government yet.

Indian officials and sources say recognition may happen later if certain concerns are addressed.

India wants guarantees that Afghan territory will not be used for attacks against India.

It also wants more clarity about human rights, women’s rights and social inclusion.

India reopened a technical mission in Kabul in 2022 and upgraded it to an embassy in 2025.

Afghan ministers have visited India to discuss business, health, farming and transportation.

India is especially interested because Afghanistan is important to its regional strategy.

Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, along with China’s growing influence, are also affecting India’s decisions.
