Disney Settles $10mn Privacy Breach Over YouTube Content
Disney has agreed to pay $10 million to settle allegations that it broke privacy laws for children.
The company did not correctly label some of its videos on YouTube as being for kids.
This allowed ads to be shown to children and collected their data without asking their parents.
The US government said Disney should have known better and made them promise to follow the rules in the future.
Disney said this only affects some of its videos on YouTube, not its own websites or apps.
The rules say that if a video is for kids under 13, the creators must get permission from parents before collecting any personal information.
Disney was aware of the problem as early as June 2020 but did not fix it right away.
Disney agrees to pay $10 million to settle allegations of breaching children’s privacy laws on YouTube.
Regulators found Disney failed to correctly label children’s videos, enabling targeted advertising and data collection.
The settlement includes a compliance program to adhere to children’s data protection laws.
Disney uploaded videos to over 1,250 YouTube channels, many of which were popular and viewed by children.
The case follows a 2019 settlement between the FTC and Google, requiring creators to label children’s content.
