Study Highlights Plight of Bonded Labourers in Delhi and India
A new study found that many workers in India, especially those from lower castes, are forced to work without pay or proper treatment.
These workers, often from other states, are not protected by laws and do not receive the money they are owed.
The study also found that children and women are especially affected, with many not getting the help they need after being rescued.
The report suggests changes to laws and better support for these workers to improve their situation.
A study by NCCEBL found systemic neglect of bonded labourers in Delhi and other parts of India.
Migrant workers, especially from marginalised castes, are often trafficked into exploitative jobs with unpaid wages and delayed rehabilitation.
Caste is central to the pattern of exploitation, with 63% of rescued workers being Scheduled Castes.
Over 93% of rescued workers were inter-state migrants, none of whom were registered under the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act.
Wage theft is widespread, with 53% of rescued workers reporting unpaid wages averaging Rs 32,514 per worker.
