ECI Orders FIRs for SIR Camp Vandalism
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the Murshidabad district administration to file a police report against a local Trinamool Congress leader, Manirul Islam, for his alleged involvement in a violent incident on January 14.
A group of people, reportedly led by the MLA, damaged the Farakka BDO office and harassed officials.
Six workers from the MLA's party were arrested, but no action was taken against the MLA himself.
The Commission wants the MLA to be held accountable for his actions.
The Congress party thinks the Commission is trying to mislead people, while some officials believe the Commission is trying to prevent future incidents by taking this action.
Additionally, a video surfaced where the MLA allegedly threatened the ECI, intensifying the political and administrative confrontation over the SIR process in Bengal.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) directed the Murshidabad district administration to file an FIR against Trinamool Congress MLA Manirul Islam for his alleged role in the vandalism of the Farakka BDO office on January 14.
The ECI asked the District Magistrate to ensure the FIR is registered by 5 p.m. on January 19, but no FIR had been filed as of Thursday evening.
A mob allegedly led by the MLA stormed into the BDO office, damaging furniture and documents, and manhandling officials.
Six Trinamool workers were arrested and later granted bail, but no action was taken against the MLA.
The Congress party termed the ECI's action as an attempt to mislead people, while some officials believe the FIR would force the MLA to think twice before committing similar crimes in the future.
