India Sees Dengue and COVID-19 Surges in 2025
In 2025, India saw a big increase in dengue cases, which is a disease spread by mosquitoes.
This happened because of several reasons.
First, the weather was different, with more rain and warmth, which helped mosquitoes breed more.
Second, cities grew quickly, creating more places for mosquitoes to live.
Third, the dengue virus changed, making people who had it before more likely to get it again and get sicker.
Finally, there were not enough efforts to control the mosquitoes.
To prevent dengue in 2026, people can do things like get rid of standing water, use bug spray, cover water containers, and seek medical help early if they feel sick.
Everyone needs to work together to keep the mosquito population down and stay healthy.
Additionally, there was a mild increase in COVID-19 cases in 2025, with new subvariants like JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFG being detected.
Most cases were mild, and vaccines continued to offer strong protection against severe illness and hospitalization.
India reported 49,573 dengue cases and 42 deaths by August 2025, with estimated cases around 2-2.25 lakhs.
The surge in dengue cases was driven by weather patterns, urban growth, virus behavior, and operational gaps in vector control.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes thrive in warmer, more humid conditions and breed in small water collections.
Urban expansion and heat islands create more breeding sites for mosquitoes, increasing dengue incidence.
Preventive measures for dengue include eliminating standing water, using repellents, covering water storage, seeking early medical care, coordinating clean-up days, and practical education.
