India's IGX Gas Price Index Drops 11% YoY in Oct 2025; First ssLNG Trade Executed
Imagine a price tag for natural gas in India that people use to compare prices, called the IGX benchmark.
In October 2025, this price tag was 11% lower than the previous year and 6% lower than the month before.
This happened because not many people needed gas, and the gas from other countries was also cheaper.
In the same month, the total amount of gas traded on the exchange went down a lot because less gas was available from an area called KG Basin and the electricity companies didn't need as much.
But, a new thing happened: they successfully traded a smaller amount of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time at a place called Hazira.
Some gas was sold at a set price, while other gas was sold at market prices.
More trades happened for gas that needed to be delivered monthly and weekly.
India's benchmark gas price index (GIXI) fell 11% year-on-year and 6% month-on-month in October 2025.
The decline in IGX prices aligns with softer international benchmarks in Europe and Asia, despite a rise in US Henry Hub prices.
Total traded volumes on IGX decreased by 46% to 3.1 million MMBtu due to lower domestic supplies and weak demand.
The first small-scale LNG (ssLNG) trade was executed at the Hazira delivery point.
Monthly and Weekly contracts were the most frequent trade types, accounting for 38 trades each.
