Canada Matches US Tariffs After Trade Talks Collapse

The United States and Canada were trying to make a new trade agreement.

The talks broke down after the United States imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian products.

These tariffs affect about 5% of Canada’s yearly exports to the United States.

Canada says the United States wanted to limit Canada’s ability to make trade deals with other countries.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would not accept the deal offered.

He also said Canada would match the new US tariffs dollar for dollar.

The United States says Canada changed its demands and backed away from promises.

Canada’s new tariffs are scheduled to begin on the Tuesday after Labour Day.
