Rights Groups Oppose Proposed Expansion of U.S.-Israel Defense Ties

A group of 56 organizations wants Congress to remove part of a proposed defense bill.

That section would make it easier for the United States and Israel to work together on military technology.

The groups say this could give Israel more influence in the U.S. defense industry.

They are especially concerned because public support for Israel has declined during the Gaza war.

Supporters of the provision say closer cooperation could help both countries develop military technology faster.

The House of Representatives has already passed its version of the bill.

The Senate still needs to consider its version.

The two chambers must agree on one final bill before it can go to the president.
