India Extends Port Environmental Clearances to 20 Years

India Extends Port Environmental Clearances to 20 Years

India has changed the rules for environmental approvals for ports and similar projects.

These approvals will now last for 20 years instead of 10 years.

A project may be allowed another five years if experts review its environmental protections.

In deserving cases, it may receive one more five-year extension.

The government says ports often take a long time to build and are developed in stages.

Experts can require additional safeguards in the project’s environmental management plan.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the change and linked it to the planned transshipment port in Great Nicobar.

The ministry made the change by amending the Environment Impact Assessment Notification 2006.
