Decentralized Waste Processing Could Save BMC Billions Annually
Mumbai is producing a lot of trash!
Right now, the city spends a lot of money to take waste to landfills far away.
A report suggests the city could save a lot of money, over a billion rupees, if each neighborhood handled its own waste.
This is because the city spends money on two things: transporting trash to a far off area, and operating the landfill.
By dealing with trash closer to home, the city could save money.
This could also include reducing waste sent to landfills which helps the environment.
Decentralized waste processing could save the BMC Rs 1,485 crore annually.
Mumbai generated nearly 24.4 lakh metric tonnes of waste in 2024.
The BMC spends Rs 883 crore yearly on transporting waste to landfills.
The operations and maintenance cost at Kanjurmarg landfill is Rs 602 crore annually.
The Praja report suggests local waste treatment within wards could save costs.
