Assam Stalls Bangladesh Consular Jail Access
The Bangladesh consular office in Guwahati has been trying to visit jails in Assam to check on Bangladeshi nationals who are detained there.
The Indian government's foreign affairs department said it was okay for them to visit, but the Assam state government hasn't replied to their requests.
This is unusual because it hasn't happened before since the consular office started in 2017.
The consular office needs to visit to give travel permits to these people so they can go back to Bangladesh.
There are currently 45 Bangladeshi nationals in Assam's jails.
The Assam government wants to send back all people declared as foreigners by the courts within a week.
In the past few years, over 1,500 foreigners have been deported, but there are still many cases waiting to be decided.
Assam government has not responded to four requests for consular visits to jails despite MEA approval.
Three requests have expired, and the fourth is near expiry.
Consular access is necessary to verify identities and issue travel permits for deportation.
Over 650 travel permits have been issued in the last eight years.
Currently, 45 declared Bangladeshi nationals are detained in four facilities across Assam.
