Clicking Knees: When Harmless Sounds Need Medical Attention

Clicking Knees: When Harmless Sounds Need Medical Attention

Knees can sometimes make clicking or popping sounds when they move.

This can happen as tendons or ligaments glide, or because pressure changes inside the joint.

If the sound does not hurt and the knee works normally, it is usually not a problem.

Painful clicking needs more attention.

Swelling, stiffness, locking or a feeling that the knee may give way are also warning signs.

A click after a fall, sports injury or twist should be checked by a doctor.

Doctors may use an examination and sometimes an X-ray or MRI to find the cause.

Clicking by itself does not mean that surgery is needed.
