Women's share of Afghan workforce falls to 5% under Taliban

Five years ago, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and made many rules about what women and girls can do.

Because of these rules, it became very hard for women to go to school or get jobs.

A group called the International Labour Organization, which studies jobs around the world, looked at how many women in Afghanistan are working.

They found that in 2020, about 16 out of every 100 women had jobs.

By 2026, that number had fallen to only about 5 out of every 100 women.

That is a very big drop, and experts say it is unfair.

Only one other country, Yemen, has fewer working women.

Some women in Afghanistan started their own small businesses instead, and the number of women-owned businesses grew ten times bigger.

Meanwhile, more men in Afghanistan are working than before.

The experts say Afghanistan needs to include women in work so the whole country can be stronger.
