Google, Meta, X Appear Before Parliamentary IT Panel
A group of big internet companies like Google, Meta, and X went to a special meeting in the Indian parliament.
They talked about how social media should be controlled after a big mistake that happened when the Prime Minister’s Facebook post was temporarily taken down.
The government was worried that the mistake could affect national safety and public order.
They also talked about how too much social media can hurt people’s minds, especially kids.
The meeting was led by a politician named Nishikant Dubey.
Representatives from Google, Meta, X, Snapchat, and YouTube appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT.
The committee, chaired by BJP member Nishikant Dubey, met after the government summoned Meta’s global team over a brief restriction of PM Narendra Modi’s Facebook post.
MeitY cited concerns over algorithmic bias, public order, and national security, deeming Meta’s explanation of a technical glitch as inadequate.
Hyderabad Cyber Crime police registered cases against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and accounts for alleged AI‑generated posts targeting the prime minister.
The panel discussed broader impacts of social media on society, including mental well‑being of children.
