India Faces Diplomatic Test at High-Stakes BRICS Summit

India is preparing to host a large BRICS meeting in New Delhi.

Leaders from many parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America are expected to attend.

Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian are among them.

The countries are officially supposed to discuss trade, development money and changes to global institutions.

However, fighting and tensions in the Middle East could dominate private discussions.

Iran wants the final statement to reflect its views on the conflict, strikes and sanctions.

BRICS decisions require agreement from all delegations, so one country can block disputed wording.

India has relationships with Israel and Iran and depends on Gulf energy, shipping and workers.

The summit will test whether India can help countries with different interests agree on a shared statement.
