KMC Redraws Wards Amid Tight Deadline
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is working hard to redraw the boundaries of its wards.
Right now, there are 144 wards, but after this exercise, there will be about 200.
The goal is to make sure each ward has a similar number of voters, between 14,000 and 18,000.
Some wards currently have as few as 12,000 voters, while others have as many as 80,000.
The KMC has set a tight deadline for this work.
Borough teams have until July 23 to submit their reports, and the draft of the new ward boundaries is expected to be published by July 31.
The KMC is working quickly to meet this deadline, with officials skipping their weekly breaks.
They are also checking to make sure the new boundaries follow the rules, like using roads as boundaries and keeping polling booths within the same ward.
