Mumbai Court Rejects Police Plea for Drug Retesting
In Mumbai, the police seized a lot of tablets they thought were drugs worth Rs 2.22 crore.
They sent samples to a lab, but the tests came back negative.
The police wanted to send more samples to another lab for more tests.
The court said no because just having a negative result isn't a good enough reason to retest.
The court said the police need to show special reasons for retesting, which they didn't do.
A lawyer for the people accused in the case also said there was no need for more tests.
Mumbai police seized 1,11,400 tablets suspected to be addictive opioids valued at Rs 2.22 crore in July 2025.
Forensic tests on the samples came back negative for narcotics.
The police applied to retest additional samples at a different forensic lab, but the court rejected the plea.
The court stated that retesting is only permitted in exceptional circumstances, which were not provided by the police.
The lawyer for the accused opposed the retesting, arguing that the police usually rely on the same lab's reports for convictions.
