Sikkim Plans Digital Permit Overhaul to Curb Leakage, Protect Tourism

Sikkim wants to replace much of its paper-based tourist permit process with one digital system.

The system may use artificial intelligence to make applications faster and easier.

It is meant to show clearly which permits are issued and how much money is collected.

Tourists would still apply through authorised Sikkim-based tour operators and travel agencies.

Each agency would have its own account so transactions can be tracked.

The government would remain in charge, while another agency could provide the technology.

Some permits could be non-transferable to prevent misuse or resale.

The plan also includes digital payments, safety support, refunds and backup arrangements during power or internet problems.

Officials say the system should support tourism while protecting the environment, security and restricted destinations.
