AP Launches Counselling for First-Year MBBS Students
The Andhra Pradesh government has started a special program to help first-year medical students (MBBS) deal with stress and prevent suicides.
They teamed up with an organization called the QPR Institute of India to run this program.
The government noticed that many medical students, especially in their first year, feel very stressed and sometimes have thoughts of suicide.
A survey showed that a lot of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, have these issues but are afraid to ask for help.
The program will check how students are feeling, give them counselling, and assign someone in each college to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The government will pay for the training, even for students in private colleges.
A doctor from the US will be in charge of the training.
This is the first time such a program has been started in India.
Andhra Pradesh government launched a structured counselling programme for first-year MBBS students to curb suicide rates.
The programme is a collaboration between Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) and the QPR Institute of India.
The initiative covers first-year MBBS students in both government and private medical colleges.
A 2024 National Medical Commission (NMC) survey found high rates of suicidal tendencies and mental health disorders among medical students.
The programme includes assessment through questionnaires, targeted counselling, and designated coordinators in each college.
